autumn porch

Hello! How was your weekend?  I hope you enjoyed some fun fall activities!
I finally got my rear in gear to decorate for the season.  My mom and I made our way to Al's Garden Center last week, and I purchased some fall goodies to decorate the front porch.

There are a few thrifted items thrown in for a unique look, but I think if you are inspired, you could probably find similar items yourself.
Here's what you see from the front door:

This owl was purchased from Goodwill for $6.99.  It's the kind you see on houses to scare away birds.  After a light cleaning, I taped off the eyes and nose, and then spray painted with my favorite- Rustoleum's white primer.

After a couple coats, he was ready for a little sparkle.  I spot sprayed a little aerosol glue in some key spots, and then sprinkled a clear glitter over the glue.

I like little touches of sparkle in any decor, and with Halloween, it adds a bit of a magical touch.

Corn stalks and hay bales are always something I have on my porch in the fall.  The welcome sign you see here was also a Goodwill find- $3.99.  It must be some kind of skillet or something?
Here's the before:

The dark metal and simplicity was just perfect for a little sign.
Normally when I transfer a graphic or font to something like this I just use a pencil.  But with this dark of a background I like to use white graphite paper.

It's just like regular graphite transfer, but it's easier to see on a black background.  You can get it at art supply stores anywhere.

Some white craft paint was all it took to complete.

Next, the twig chairs and porch swing got a seasonal makeover- I added some fall pillows to them by making slipcovers for our regular pillows I have out during the summer.

They are made from men's flannel shirts!

This project was one I wanted to do last year, and never got to.  These were very simple to make, and if you are interested in the tutorial, I may do one for tomorrow's post.
You could do these for any holiday.
I'm thinking some red plaid ones would be great for Christmas!  With the buttons, you have a built in envelope enclosure to slip the pillows in and out of.

I got these three shirts from Goodwill also- any thrift store will have them on the cheap.

The front steps to the door also got a few seasonal items- some gourds and pumpkins...

...and I used a large galvanized tub on it's side to highlight the flowers and pumpkin.

This time of year is the beginning of the rainy season, so everything has to be ok with being wet while it's out here.
I'm looking forward to some afternoons on the porch with a hot apple cider in hand!
I hope this inspires you with some ideas for your own porch!
Have a great week!!

It`s really gorgeous, Denise. I`m in love with the plaid pillows and I would love to see your tutorial on how to make them. I used to be able to put corn stalks by my front door as you have done, the the squirrels knocked them down to steal the corn!

You are so creative. The owl was great and the change from beginning to end was a nice surprise - and then I saw you shirts -> to -> pillows. What a great idea, especially using the button area for getting the cushions in/out.
